Synopsis

This paper discusses the problem of sustainable development from the point of view of the relationship between humankind and all things within the universe, and presents the implications of the Confucian concept of ontological oneness of humankind and all things within the universe. Sustainable development is a result of the interaction of humankind and all things within the universe and could not be separated from the future generations of all things. On the other hand, actions are always acts in the present and by individuals while sustainable development has ethical implications for such acts that bear upon future generations. This paper starts with a clarification of the meanings and implications of the notion of sustainable development. By introducing the socalled personal worldview imperative, it explores the presuppositions and moral duties implied for a rational person with integrity.By a critique of land ethic, it presents the basic moral principles of a Confucian environmental ethics that are embodied in the Confucian conception of taking humankind and all things being ontologically one whole, and that human being is not just a steward but an incubator of all things.
