Abstract The conception of the “unity of the Six Classics (Five Classics)”
refers to the integration, by scholars from the Warring States through
the Qin and Han periods, of a large number of classical texts—written
by different authors, compiled at different times, and varied in
content—into a single, coherent intellectual system after the
formation of the canonical texts and the establishment of their
normative status. From the Western Han onward, this concept further
shaped practices of classical interpretation. Taking Different
Interpretations of the Meaning of the Five Classics (Wujing Yiyi), a
representative work that foregrounds divergent interpretations (yiyi),
as an example, one can concretely examine how Xu Shen and Zheng
Xuan, under the influence of the conception of “unity of the Six
Classics (Five Classics),” developed debates in classical learning and
engaged in exegetical practice. In addition to analyzing the process
through which the conception “unity of the Six Classics (Five
Classics)” took shape, this article also examines the different and
shared features of Xu Shen’s and Zheng Xuan’s approaches, as well
as the transformations in exegetical thinking and methodology they reveal. If the conception of “unity of the Six Classics (Five Classics)”
is not merely a long-neglected relic in the histories of classical studies
and philology, but rather a form of theoretical creativity that calls for
continual refinement, then it remains perpetually open to those
aspiring to and are capable of contributing to it, constantly renewing
and enriching its meanings.
