摘要

狄培理主編的東方文化導論三種,對美國的東方學研究與通識教育有重大的影響。本文從他的學問歷程,說明宋明理學與當代儒學是其經典教育理念的來源,他的核心課程理念來自朱子書院教育課程,而加以現代化。本文接著介紹涂爾幹對法國16世紀以來古典教育歷史的論述,與現代美國教育哲學家赫欽斯對博雅與通識教育的看法,由比較觀點說明狄培理經典教育的特色。

Synopsis

Wm. Theodore de Bary has great influence on the Oriental studies and general education in the United States through his edition of three Introductions to Oriental Civilizations. This article traces from his own education the origins of his conception of general education to Song and Ming Confucianism and Contemporary Confucianism, and the conception of core courses to the curricula of Zhu Xi's academy (Shuyuan). This article then introduces Durkeim's discourse of the history of Classical education in France since the sixteenth century and Hutchins's conception of liberal arts and general education. By their comparison, this article discusses the characteristics of de Bary's conception of general education.
