Tai Lian-Chang (1932-2022) was influenced by the teachings of Qu Wan-Li (1909-1995), which are reflected in his interpretation of the Book of Changes. In his later years, in The Book of Changes and Its Commentaries: An Interpretation (zhouyijingzhuangshujie周易經傳疏解), Tai relied heavily on Qu's insights on the history of ancient society as well as his exegetical readings of the text. This paper focuses on the manner in which Tai values the academic spirit of Qu's Yi learning and focuses on its historical value. The Formation of the Ten Wings and Their Thought (yizhuangzhixingcheng ji qi sixiang易傳之形成及其思想), written by Tai, is based on the method of the structure and analysis of outline by suggested by Gao Heng (1900-1986), and the style of The Book of Changes and Its Commentaries: An Interpretation is somewhat different. This development of Tai's account was fundamentally influenced by Qu's concepts. This paper analyzes two focal points. Tai's research on numerical trigrams and his depiction of the examples from the Book of Changes can be noted in Qu's statement, "The Book of Changes is a creation, not a compilation." Tai's conceptual understanding of "strong (剛gang) / weak (柔rou) holding the center" was shaped from the constructs detailed in Qu's merging of the Commentary on the Decision (彖傳tuanchuan) and the Commentary on Images (象傳xiangchuan). It transforms the essence of numbers and images (象數xiangshu) described in Qu's academic spirit, allowing the orientation of the will to emerge. The reason why Tai highly valued this spirit, especially the grammar of the Book of Changes (《易》例yili) is its orientation toward connotations of morality.
